Best Opening Moves in Mahjong Solitaire

The first few moves decide how flexible the rest of a Mahjong Solitaire board will feel. A weak opening removes tiles without opening space. A strong opening creates new free tiles, exposes buried matches, and keeps several areas of the board alive.

This guide explains what to look for before move one, using the Mahjong Turtle board as the main example.

Start with tiles that uncover something

A good opening pair should change the board. On the Turtle, that usually means removing a tile from the upper mound, the head, the tail, or the end of a long row. These positions expose new tiles immediately or prepare a row to unzip inward.

A weak opening removes two tiles that were already harmless. If neither tile blocks anything and neither tile opens a side, the move may be fine later, but it is rarely the best first move.

Avoid clearing only one side

Opening one flank of the Turtle can feel productive because tiles disappear quickly, but it can leave the other side locked and short of partners. Better openings keep the left side, right side, and center developing together.

On Pyramid and Mountain layouts, the same idea applies to tiers: work opposite corners or both ends of a ridge instead of stripping one face completely.

Spend easy matches only when they help

Flowers and seasons are tempting early because any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season. Use them when they uncover covered tiles or unlock an awkward row. If they are sitting freely on the outside, consider saving them as emergency matches for later.

The same applies to obvious suit pairs. A match is strongest when it improves access, not merely when it is available.

Opening checklist

  • Does this pair remove a tile from the top stack?
  • Does it open the end of a long row?
  • Does it reveal a tile that was covered or boxed in?
  • Does it keep both sides of the layout active?
  • Will it leave at least one copy of that tile available if another copy is buried?

Frequently asked questions

Is the first available pair ever the best move?

Sometimes, but only if it opens new tiles or removes a blocker. Availability alone is not enough reason to take a pair.
