What is Mahjong Turtle?

Mahjong Turtle is the classic Mahjong Solitaire board: 144 tiles stacked in a wide body with a small head, a tail, long side rows, and a raised center mound. It is a single-player matching puzzle, not the four-player gambling game. The challenge is to remove every tile by pairing free matching tiles in an order that keeps the board open.

The Turtle layout is interesting because it mixes several problems at once. The top mound hides important tiles, the long base rows must be opened from their ends, and the head and tail can unlock chains of new moves. That makes it deeper than a flat matching game while still being calm enough for a short break.

How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile-matching puzzle built from a traditional set of 144 Chinese mahjong tiles. Your goal is simple: remove every tile from the board by matching pairs.

You can only select a tile that is free, meaning no tile rests on top of it and at least one of its left or right edges is exposed. Click one free tile, then click a matching free tile, and the pair disappears. Clear the whole board to win. The Pairs open counter shows how many matches are currently available.

Tips and strategy

• Free higher layers first because tiles under the mound block the most information.
• Open the long rows from their ends so each removal exposes the next tile inward.
• When two pairs of the same tile are available, remove the pair that frees more tiles.
• Save harmless edge pairs when they may match a buried tile later.
• Use Hint to find a legal pair, Undo to test a better order, and Shuffle when no moves remain.
